Random IE7 "cannot display webpage" errors

Hi everyone!

I really hope someone out there can help me out with this, because it’s
driving me insane! I have searched and searched through endless forums and
websites trying to find a solution, but I can’t seem to find one.

I’ve got a brand new computer, running Vista Home Premium, and from the
moment I got it I have been having problems with Internet Explorer 7 and
Windows Live Messenger. I connect to the internet via a wireless network
connection, using a Linksys Wireless-G USB Network Adapter with Speedbooster,
and I never had this problem with my XP computer, which also had IE7 and WLM.
So, I am guessing it’s either a Vista-related problem or something to do with
my internet/connection settings.

The problem is this... I can connect to the internet and access different
websites as normal, but then at random, I start to get the “Internet Explorer
cannot display the webpage� page and at the same time, WLM loses its
connection. It’s not always the same website(s) that causes it, like I said
it’s just really random. Sometimes the page eventually appears after
refreshing about 10-20 times, but each time I click ‘Refresh’, WLM
disconnects again. WebPages that are open in other tabs are not affected;
they refresh and reload as normal.

It doesn’t seem to be a connection problem because when it happens, AIM and
other stuff, like Outlook etc., stay connected and the network icon in the
taskbar says I am connected as normal. It just seems that whatever is wrong
just affects IE and WLM. The IE problem still occurs even when WLM isn’t
running, and WLM sometimes disconnects even when a webpage loads okay in IE!

This is what the IE page says:-

Most likely causes:
• You are not connected to the Internet.
• The website is encountering problems.
• There might be a typing error in the address.

This problem can be caused by a variety of issues, including:
• Internet connectivity has been lost.
• The website is temporarily unavailable.
• The Domain Name Server (DNS) is not reachable.
• The Domain Name Server (DNS) does not have a listing for the website's
domain.
• If this is an HTTPS (secure) address, click Tools, click Internet Options,
click Advanced, and check to be sure the SSL and TLS protocols are enabled
under the security section.

I am connected to the internet, there isn’t a typing error in the address,
the website isn’t encountering problems, and I made sure SSL and TLS
protocols are enabled. The network diagnostic programme can’t find anything
wrong.

I've cleared the IE cache, reset IE settings, installed Windows updates,
reinstalled network drivers, updated network drivers, installed any
Vista-related drivers needed, run virus/spyware scans, I’ve tried disabling
TCP/IPv6, as suggested on another site, and I’ve tried to reset Winsock and
TCP/IP settings using the cmd prompt.

I even installed Firefox but the exact same thing happens. I can access the
internet no problem and can access websites, but then all of a sudden I get
the following page:-

The connection was reset
The connection to the server was reset while the page was loading.

And, as with IE, Windows Live Messenger disconnects.

I just have no idea what to try next. I don’t even know for sure what is
even causing it, so it’s hard to try and find a solution because I don’t
really know what I am searching for!! Is it just yet another Vista blip? Is
it a simple network setting that I don’t know about? What?

Please, if anyone has any ideas what could be causing this, can you let me
know?

I am also having this same problem, but only with IE as I don't have WLM on
my PC. I randomly get the "cannot display" message, even when revisiting the
same site through the back button (doesn't it cache?). I'll also sometimes
have a site load, but none of the images will load. It all started when I
upgraded my Primary PC to Vista from XP (both were on IE7). I tried
troiubleshooting it myself and searching the web, all to no avail. I also
have a laptop and second pc both running xp and IE7 and they each work fine.

My attempted solutions so far (many the same as sarah):

I've also tried adjusting other settings in my router, turned my firewall
completely off, turned off the phishing filter (which strangely seemed to
speed up performance when my connection does work), turned off IP6 support,
and tried updating my network drivers.

Any help would really be appreciated.

I am also having this same problem. In the IE and Firefox on Vista
Ultimate I randomly get the "cannot display web page" but sometimes
WLM is working fine, and sometimes I'm being disconected from WLM.
Also I tried to ping random web pages like google.com... from command
prompt using "ping google.com -t" and I always get reply even when IE
or Firefox is unable to opet google.com. Also sometimes my FTP
download is interrupted and sometimes not. I have a lap-top in local
network with WinXP Professional which is connected to internet trough
my shared PPPOE conection on Vista, and when IE on Vista displays
"cannot display" message, the IE7 on lap-top with winXP sometimes
works perfectly and sometimes it also displays "cannot display"
message. It's driving me crazy, my work is suffering because of this
problem, and I don't have time to reinstal Vista with all application.

Good to know:
I'm using wireless USB adapter D-Link 120+ for IEEE 802.11b standard
to connect to access point of my ISP. To authenticate myself I'm using
PPPOE connection, I also have enabled Windows Defender, Windoes
Firewall, and NOD32 as my antivirus software.
