Vista Bluetooth sync with Windows Mobile problems
Hi all, I hope someone is able to help. I cannot get WM5's ActiveSync to
start the Bluetooth sync, yet everything is paired and set up correctly:

On Windows Vista:
The PPC is paired by Bluetooth (had to switch from Toshiba to Windows stack)
It automatically assigned in/out ports to the PPC
Mobile Device Centre Bluetooth is ON

On Windows Mobile 5:
The device is paired to the PC
ActiveSync is ticked as a service for the PC

But when I go to the PPC and click Menu > Connect via Bluetooth it says:
"Cannot find an existing Bluetooth partnership with a PC that supports
ActiveSync. Would you like to set up a partnership now?"
Yes it is set up, and ActiveSync ticked!

I have tried this many times, cleared everything, rebooted, set it all up
again. No go.

Thanks in advance to anyone who can help.

Re: Vista Bluetooth sync with Windows Mobile problems
I have made a manual for setting up a bluetooth sync relation with Windows
Mobiles from Activesync
(http://modernnomads.info/wiki/index....ugh+bluetooth).
Basically WMDV (Vista) and ActiveSync are the same product in a different
packaging, making the routes to settings different.

What I have noticed (and reported as a bug) is:
"that ONLY the first bluetooth port on the desktop will work due to a bug in
Windows Mobile/ActiveSync. Added Bluetooth Serial Ports will not be
recognized as providing an ActiveSync service."

Is this the case in your situation as well?

Re: Vista Bluetooth sync with Windows Mobile problems
On second thought, does the WMDC-partnership between the device and PC
already exist? Because that does seem to be a prerequisite.

Re: Vista Bluetooth sync with Windows Mobile problems
Hi, yes I set up the partership via USB first.

There are no other Bluetooth ports showing, just COM9 & 10 which the
Microsoft stack set up automatically.

Thing is WMDC doesn't let you choose a COM port so your guide really doesn't
work for Vista, as so many variables are different in Vista.

What I think is the problem is at the WM5 device:
>> But when I go to the PPC and click Menu > Connect via Bluetooth it says:
>> "Cannot find an existing Bluetooth partnership with a PC that supports
>> ActiveSync. Would you like to set up a partnership now?"
>> Yet it is set up, and ActiveSync ticked!

It does this without even seeming to communicate with the PC to 'look'
first.

Ideas?

Re: Vista Bluetooth sync with Windows Mobile problems
lets take a look on the problem:
1.-my ppc (qtek 2020, windows mobile 2004, windows bt stack)) connect with
my pc (vista ultimate) over widcomm bt stack. that means no problem on both
bt stacks
2.-no connection on wmdc via bt, even configuring it to accept bluetooth
connections, but no problem via usb cradle. that means no problem with vista
firewall.
so, lets think about: when i connect ppc bt, some services appears on pc bt:
activesync, obex, voice gateway... But wmdc works over serial port. Resuming:
wmdc needs SERIAL PORT. ppc offers ACTIVESYNC. More problems: activesync
software allows to choice com port to connect bt to. wmdc not.
SOLUTIONS:
1.-as i ve read on the net: modify registry values , so we can tell wmdc
which com port must be used to connect bt. this com port must be the same one
assigned to activesync service when ppc is connected to pc bt stack. in my
case: COM5. So, a bit of regedit, look for HKLM\software\microsoft\windows ce
services\serial port, and change value, which is usually bluetooth, writting
COM5 instead (or whatever com port you have assigned to your activesync
service).
then save, close regedit and reboot pc. reconnect ppc and let bt stack add
new bt devices so we can reconfigure bt ppc services in order to:
2.-this is my finding: once ppc found, go to select which services we want
to use onn bt, select activesync and click over configuration. in the new
window, you can change the name of the service, that obviously is activesync
and put a new name: Serial Port. and voila!!!. open wmdc on pc, open
activesync on ppc, click on connect using bluetooth and youll see how
wonderfully wmdc connect with your ppc.

I really wish I understood you because that sounds promising, but I'm afraid
despite trying I can't quite work out what you mean.

Anyone able to help us translate this to a working 'how to' guide
specifically for Vista?

ok, cjsnet, ill try to explain the whole procedure again, and maybe it will
be useful as "how to".
remember that not all bluetooth stacks accept or offer all bluetooth
services. this procedure was made up using wdcomm 5 bt stack on pc(windows
vista ultimate) and ms bt stack on ppc (ms mobile 2003, se). if you use other
stacks, it may vary.

HOW TO CONNECT WMDC AND PPC ON VISTA

1.-run bt on your pc
2.-run bt on your ppc
3.-bond your pc and ppc via bt, that will require password on both devices
4.-once connected, your pc will show some services your ppc is offering:
activesync, voice gateway, obex, etc. and will allow you to configure some of
them. your pc assings by default one specific com port to activesync
service, that may vary depending on free com ports available on your pc. you
can see the assigned port clicking on configuration button. on the new
window, you can see COM PORT. for our purposes, lets suppose is COM5
5.-run wmdc software, modify connecions and mark on allow bluetooth
connection, which is not marked by default. close wmdc.
6.-old activesync program allows to choice com port to connect to. wmdc does
not. it must be set modifing windows vista registry. so, run regedit and look
for the key HKLM\software\microsoft\windows ce services\serial port. this
key has usually the value "bluetooth" (without quotes). well, modify it,
deleting bluetooth and writting COM5. (or any other com port your pc has
assigned to activesync). notice that we are modifing SERIAL PORT, that means
wmdc uses this service to connect.
7.-close regedit and reboot pc in order to allow changes in the registry.
8.-run again bt on both devices.
9.- run "add new bluetooth devices" on your pc. it will detect again your
ppc and services it provides, including activesync. configure again
activesync service, and check out com port is still the same as before. in
this configuration window, you will notice you can modify the NAME of the
service, that is "activesync" (without quotes). well, change it, and write
Serial Port.
10.-run again wmdc and it will connect to your ppc

resuming:
1.-activesync ppc service is connected to pc using COM5
2.-wmdc is forced to use serial port on COM5
3.-we change the name of activesync ppc service to serial port service, so
we can bypass the problem

Re: Vista Bluetooth sync with Windows Mobile problems
Hi, I do appreciate your help, but your steps do not follow what the actual
devices allow or do. Do you have WM5 and Vista?

Ok - from Control Panel

Ok - set it to be discoverable to other devices

Ok

My PC (Vista) shows nothing of the sort. Can you clarify where the PC will
show these services? If I go into the properties on Vista for my WM5
device, all I see is "Dial-up networking (DUN) COM4" under Services.

On the PPC I see ActiveSync.

By clicking Properties > Services, but I only see DUN not ActiveSync.

No, sorry, I do not see Activesync in the list of services, either on the PC
or PPC. Before modding the registry, I did see ActiveSync JUST on the PPC.

I understand the pricinple now thanks, but it just doesn't work, in fact it
makes matters worse by removing the ActiveSync service from the PPC list.

I hope someone from MS is watching and making this nightmare process simpler
for the next release!

Re: Vista Bluetooth sync with Windows Mobile problems
Jaap,

It appears your manual is for XP not Vista. Part of the problem is VISTA is
not setting up an ActiveSync Bluetooth connection just a standard connection.
The Vista Bluetooth stack seems to be the problem for me. There is NO
services tab on the Vista Bluetooth Devices dialog.

Do you have a differant manual for Vista?

Thanks,
