vpn pptp

Judging by posts and the internet, loads of people have this or a similar
error. When connecting to our VPN (using PPTP, VPN is hosted on a Cisco
firewall) I get error 734. The VPN works perfectly well with XP, 2000, 98,
OSX but not with Vista (Premium edition).

Logs show it connects to the firewall but seemingly has trouble
communicating once connected. I suspect enhanced security somewhere in Vista
is causing the prob. I've tried various things (lowering the encryption level
in the registry, changing settings within the vpn connection on the PC, all
to no avail). Wouldn't it be good to get a definitive answer from MS saying
"this has changed in our latest pptp vpn connection, this is how to change it
back to xp standards. We can then go through each step until it works.

I am getting frustrated with Vista over this. I can get the firewall changed
to whatever is required, but then I need to know that XP, 2000, OSX will
still work. The world cannot revolve around Vista, Vista has to take it's
place and fit in.

I look forward to getting this sorted, otherwise I will have to advise all
my customers on this and similar sites to avoid Vista. XP, 2000 and OSX have
no problems with this firewall, just Vista. Not good publicity for Microsoft
I fear.

Does the CISCO device run SAMBA? If so this may be the solution.

Run secpol.msc

- Click on "Local Policies" --> "Security Options"
- Navigate to the policy "Network Security: LAN Manager authentication
level" and open it.
- By default Windows Vista sets the policy to "NTVLM2 responses only".
Change this to "LM and NTLM – use NTLMV2 session security if negotiated".

If you're running a version of Vista that cannot use secpol.msc, you can
edit the registry instead. Just change the value of
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Lsa\LMCompatibilityLevel
from a 3 to a 1.

Based on my knowledge, in Windows Vista, Microsoft has removed MS-CHAP v1
from the list of authentication protocols for dial-up connections, for
broadband (PPPoE) connections, and for virtual private network (VPN)
connections.

Enable RAS Tracing Log
1. Under Vista command prompt, run ¡°netsh ras set tracing * enable¡±
2. Try to reproduce this issue, then run ¡°netsh ras set tracing * disable¡±
3. Go to %SystemRoot%\tracing, compress all files and send them to me.

Event Log
1. Run eventvwr on Vista.
2. Expand to Event Viewer (Local) ->Windows Logs->System.
3. Right click ¡°System¡±, and then select ¡°Save Events as¡*¡± to save the
system event log.
4. Send the saved event log to me.£¨v-tozhan@microsoft.com£©
