Xbox360 is seen by network but won't connect to laptop
Hi guys, 1st timer here as I'm having an issue at the moment.
I don't know why but for some reason within the last week or so my
xbox360 has stopped connecting to my hp laptop (vista home premium
32bit).
I have a 2wire 1800hg gateway, with both the laptop and xbox connected
wirelessly (using Intel link 5100/official microsoft wireless connector
respectively).
As I say before a few days ago I could access my shared media via my
xbox dashboard, as well as via the media center extender. However now
it's not working.
The 2wire has it's own firewall but I have opened the laptops
connections up completely today (although this wasn't an issue a week or
two ago?). And I've opened up many ports in windows firewall too.
When I look at the full map in the network and sharing connections
window it does indeed show the xbox and laptop connecting to the router,
so it is seeing it. However no connection can be made in either
direction (i.e. the xbox cannot find any pc's and the pc's media center
can't find the mc extender).
I've tried numerous things so far, opening ports etc.. but nothing has
worked, so this is my last resort!
I understand you guys aren't xbox experts, but any help on the network
front would be really, really appreciated.
Thanks very much,
g4e

Sorry should also mention that I have no problem connecting to xbox live
via the gateway, it's a pure media sharing issue.

Re: Xbox360 is seen by network but won't connect to laptop
Hi
IPv4 Address. . . . . . . . . . . : 86.152.101.207
It means that the laptop is connected directly to the Internet/Modem and
does not have a Local IP (local IP is usually 192.168.x.x)
If the X-Box is on a local IP then the two devices can not communicate.
There has to be a Routing system to deal with two Networked devices that are
connected on a Private LAN and share the Internet.
It is not clear from your description how (if) the Routing is done.

If you're looking to connect and share files, this is 1/4 of the diagnostics
needed. What is most useful is "browstat status" and "ipconfig /all", from each
computer (including the XBox). Read this article, and linked articles, and
follow instructions precisely (download browstat!):

Ok thanks guys, here is hopefully all the information:
Just to clarify, my laptop and xbox are both wirelessley connected to
my internet router, but the router (2wire 1800hg) can also act as a LAN
hub. Both the laptop and xbox can access the internet without problem,
but they can't 'see' each other. sorry if my terminology is bad I don't
really know much about networking!

Re: Xbox360 is seen by network but won't connect to laptop
Your PC has a public (routable) IP address and seems to be getting
this passed to it by your router (in bridge mode?) while your 360
has a private class NAT address.
You need to run your 2wire device as a router.

Re: Xbox360 is seen by network but won't connect to laptop
Hi
Read the Routers manual and make sure that it is set as a Router.
You can get the manual here,

Re: Xbox360 is seen by network but won't connect to laptop
Ok I haven't changed anything yet, but from digging around in the
options on the router:
It seems that it is set up as a router still with an IP address
192.168.1.254, and when i look at the local network
page all my wireless devices appear, except the laptop (which makes
sense if it's only seeing it as a bridge). So I guess the question is
how do I change the IP address of my laptop (currently 86.152.101.207,
the same as the bridging network of the router), to be a 192.168.etc
address, which I presume would then put it on the local area network?
Thanks,

After you get the two on the same subnet (does the 2Wire maybe have "isolation
mode" or a similar setting for "HomePC-PC"?), as Barb points out, you have
another problem to deal with.
"Unable to retrieve server list from HOMEPC-PC: 1130"
This is another IRPStackSize symptom, aka "Not enough server storage", generally
caused by using Norton Antivirus or similar products. If you want to access
"HomePC-PC" from the XBox, you need to fix this too.
