Cannot share files or access other machine on Home LAN
I have two machines on a home LAN: one wired and one wireless. Both are
Vista Ultimate. They have the same workgroup name.
From my wireless machine, I can access folders and files from the wired
machine, copy them to the wireless machine, etc.
When I go to share a folder from the wireless machine, it goes for a few
minutes and then says: your folder cannot be shared ... no reason is given.
I've done everything I can think of and looked across the Internet but can't
get it to work.
From the wired machine, when I select view computers, I can see the wireless
machine but can't access its folders or files.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thank you.

Hi Steve. Please review this article. It should tell you how to solve the
problem:

Re: Cannot share files or access other machine on Home LAN
Thank you. I'd read it already and it and tried to follow all of the
instructions (it surprises me that there are so many different things needed
to set something up in a new OS like Vista). In any case, it still doesn't
work.
I can share files from machine A to B but not B to A. Machine B also says
that "Your folder cannot be shared". when trying so mark it as shared.
I guess I'll give up and just transfer things manually via CD.
Anyway, thanks again for your reply.

Re: Cannot share files or access other machine on Home LAN
Me too Mark an Steve...Those fine folks at Microsoft dont have a clue what's
going on.
All the advice they have given dont't work...an if you ask them to speak in
Layman's terms so we can understand their advice....

Re: Cannot share files or access other machine on Home LAN
I was finally able to solve my problem. I needed to allow file sharing by
selecting, from the Network and Sharing Center: View Status/Properties and
then checking the File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks checkbox.
Afterwards, things worked as expected.
I'd think that after making all the other settings, that Vista would set
this automatically. Anyway, it now works for me.
Good luck.
