Hi
It might be that your New Modem is actually a Combo Modem/Router so the
LogOn is done by the Router part.
The Old device is a Modem only and thus needs Computer softer LogOn.
If this is so the solution is to buy your own Router and connect it between
the Old Modem and the computer.
