Broadband modem configuration
I just bought a new HP computer with Windows Vista. I access the internet via
DSL through AT&T. I configured the old DSL modem which worked fine until
Friday. AT&T tried to ping the DSL modem and it was determined to be
defective. I replaced with an older DSL modem and configured the modem and it
worked fine. I had to restart the computer, but the DSL modem was not
recognized as the default modem for internet access. I have to manually
configure the DSL modem each time the computer re-starts. I have checked the
properties of the LAN settings several times, but each time I re-start the
computer I have to re-configure the modem as default for internet access. I'm
thinking of buying a new modem. Any help is appreciated.

Re: Broadband modem configuration
Hi
It might be that your New Modem is actually a Combo Modem/Router so the
LogOn is done by the Router part.
The Old device is a Modem only and thus needs Computer softer LogOn.
If this is so the solution is to buy your own Router and connect it between
the Old Modem and the computer.

Re: Broadband modem configuration
There is a lot of that going around. ATT has a number of new procedures and
policies in place, not all of them are user friendly.

I ran into similar problems, they gave me the same 'excuse' that it was a
DSL modem/router problem. I was told to purchase a new modem, which I did.
Supposedly then the problem would be resolved - it wasn't. After several
weeks of intermittent connection, reduced speeds and blocked access through
email, I was able to prove it was caused by their configuration through
Yahoo portal. There are several complaints listed on "BroadBand" site.

At the risk of sounding like another 'flaky' conspiracy theorist, I am
starting to believe they engineer some of these outages in an effort to
build up acceptance for tiered access, older DSL modems are a hindrance to
adoption, enactment. I reinstalled my 10+ year old DSL modem, after making a
few changes on their FW, mysteriously - it is started working and continues
to work great.
