Hi again Barb,
Did not take too long. After sending you the message, I went to "Network & Sharing Center" and a few seconds after I clicked on the MAP and hovered over the devices in the network map to check the dynamic IPs they were using, the problem kicked in. It must have something to do with the LLTD Responder. I am going to reset the WiFi adapter and stay away from the network map and see what happens.

Re: Network icon says not connected but I am
Well, this has been an interesting adventure. I'm glad it is now
resolved.

Hi Barb,
You responded before reading my last message. I guess the adventure continues. Last night, I reset the adapter and did not browse, this morning and before I browsed, the WiFi icon was again showing limited connection. The only thing that happened during the night was an auto update from Windows Defender.
I intend to swap the hard drive with another formatted one and reinstall Vista, do the updates and then start installing programs one by one. Maybe I can isolate which update or which program is causing this problem.
Again I will keep you posted. By the way, if you are getting tired of this, please let me know and will save you the headache.
Mike

I'd be curious on what
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/usi...d/default.mspx
reports on your router. if anything fails, please copy the verbose
results into a reply.
(and no, I'm not getting tired of this <G> )

She has the patience of a saint, therefore she is being entered into

Hi Barb, Paul and Everyone who is viewing this thread,
I spent the whole day yesterday on this issue. Replaced my hard drive with a newly formatted one, fresh installed Vista Ultimate 32, updated to SP1 and did NOT update any further. Next, I made sure that all devices have the correct drivers and are working properly. I did not install any programs and began surfing the internet in the usual manner. After a while, the problem did occur again. So next, I rest the adapter and started updating Vista one update at a time in an effort to see if any of the updates help mitigate the problem or if removing an update would solve it. All efforts failed.
So now, I give up and will live with the problem. I am going to blame it on the Actiontec MI424WR V2 router I have although in fairness to Actiontec, I read on more than one forum that others using different routers (Linksys) have had this same issue.
The good news, this issue is only a nuissance and does not affect the operation of the computer or the WiFi adapter. So unitl someone much smarter than I am discovers a solution, I am calling it quits. Well, almost quits because I intend to paly a little with the router (revert to older firmware) so don't be surprised if you hear from again.
Best Regards,
Mike

Re: Network icon says not connected but I am
I know how annoying these unsolved mystery issues can be, but as you
say, it is not impacting operations. Best of luck.
