outlook intermittent internet access

I have a friend with a ASUS A7SV laptop running vista with sp1 that has an
unreliable internet connection when using email, and occasionally with
internet explorer.
Sometimes the dsl ethernet connected modem fails to respond to a ping but
after sometime will.
The problem usually is that internet explorer is accessing the internet ok
but outlook email will not work, with the message that the email server
cannot be found.
modem is a new netgear but do not have model number.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

It could be incompatible issue. You may try to disable auto tuning. This how

Hi dick,
Well there are lots of things he needs to check.

1. Check the windows Firewall whether its blocking smtp or pop3
2. if you have any other 3rd party firewalls check where they allow
smtp and pop3 to pass through.
3. Makre sure you have configured you mail settings properly. Since
some mail servers use different ports and settings.
