Unidentified Network

Hello all
On my new laprop with Vista Home Premium I have several network
connections for the different locations at home. Beside the wireless
internet connection I have a wired and a wireless connection to my
local network,, which ends up in a proxy server for the internet
connection.

My wireless connection directly to the internet (IP=192.168.1.51) is
correctly identified with the name of my wireless router.
The other network connections (IP 10.1.1.x) are identified as
"Unidentified network" and declared as "Public". I always have to
manually redefine it as "Private" but did not find a possibility to
change the name. Is there a way to permanently set the desired values?

I also have a problem that the connection to my XP business desktop
breaks down after a while. I have a mapping to a share (c$) which
works prefectly for a while but after some time (don't have enough
experience yet how long it actually takes) copying files from vista to
XP is not possible anymore, while the opposite direction is still OK.
I guess it cannot be a fierwall problem, I have turned off the Windows
firewall and use a desktop firewall that works OK all the time.

Hi Juerg Beck,

The answer for your first problem is you said ur wireless network is
connected to your wireless router. and your wired is connectd to your
10.10.0.x network. well is your 10.10.0.x network running any servers
what is the defult gateway your using for the 10.10.0.x network. If your
10.10.0.x network is conneting to another router then your need to
enalble LLTD on the Router itsef.

Link Layer Topology Discovery (LLTD)
protocol operates over wired (802.3 Ethernet) and wireless (802.11)
media. As the protocol name suggests, the core functions of LLTD enable
applications to discover the topology of a network. In addition, LLTD
has optional QoS Extensions that applications can use to diagnose
problems, especially those involving signal strength on wireless
networks or bandwidth constraints in home networks.

It is hard to understand the topology of the network.
Your Internet connection seems to be coming into a Wireless Router. You are
Not connecting directly to the Internet but to the LAN side of the Router
(this is the correct way to do it).
On the other hand the other part of your network seems to be separate from
this LAN Router connection. 10.1.1.x means a different subnet and thus a
separate Network.
I do not know why your system is set this way but it indicates an unusual
topology for Home Network. and thus trouble in the connections.

Hello John and Jack
I can understand that it's not easy to understand my network topology.
It's not a usual configuration and it's not used all the time this
way.
The wired local network is used when I'm using the laptop in my home
office, the wireless local network is for usage somewhere in my house
and the wireless network direct to the internet is used abroad.
All of the networks are working correctly for their specific use. I
have fixed IP addresses for all of my systems.

On first sight, the problem might be simply a "beauty" problem, at
least it's boring for me and I'm wondering why it is not possible to
manually and permanently set the network name and type. A real problem
is that the network browsing does not show any other system while my
local network is identified as "Public". Thats why I have to change it
to "Private" regularly.
I have activated the Link-Layer Topology Discovery. It seems that this
protocol doesn't know about proxy servers.
Maybe it is difficult for Vista to determine the correct network
topology because no other system in my network is a Vista system that
supports the LLTD protocol and there are different settings for file
sharing as well depending on the security level of the network.
