Put settings on USB Stick

My father has replaced his current PC with a laptop.

He is running Vista on both. Can I put his network settings from the old PC
onto a USB stick to transfer to the laptop ?

How do I do it ?

It depends on what "network settings" you are talking about. Dialup
settings? DSL settings? Workgroup settings?

??? Still not clear. If you have a DSL modem that is fairly new, simply
connect the laptop to the modem. If it is the old-style modem that can't
remember the username/password, all you need to do is enter that
information into the new computer. If your father has forgotten the
username/password, you'll need to call his ISP.

If you are talking about settings for a wireless router, NirSoft has a free
WirelessKeyViewer that will show the settings and save to a text file. This
is particularly good when the router owner has forgotten the router
password. Otherwise you can just go to the router configuration utility and
look at the encryption settings.

If you are talking about email settings, simply look on the ISP's website
for the email servers. If your father has forgotten his username and
password, you'll need to call his ISP.

Okay, specificly I'm talking wireless settings, but what prompted this is
when you set up a new network you are asked if the settings are on USB. I
foolishly thought there was a wizard or some such method for putting settings
on the stick.

Doesn't matter, I was only looking for a shortcut !! I'll use the D.I.Y
method.

ooh sorry Mick, but was that dig really necessary ?

I wasn't having a go at anyone or anything, and I do appreciate the help I'm
given in forums like this.

I was just expressing my disappointment that MS appear to have given a nice
comfy route and method for exchanging network settings between PC's and when
you look into using it nobody appears to know how.

Or more likely MS have put something there, that unless you have the all
singing all dancing version of there OS doesn't work. Why put something there
that you can't use !!

I'm also fully aware that people don't get paid for giving advice. I'm only
sounding off at MS I mean they do get paid to do this, unlike Malke.

My comments were meant with a hint of sarcasm. Seems to have hit a nerve.
