name a file share something other than it's dir name on Vista?
I can't seem to find a way to name a shared directory -- the only option
seems to be to use the exact name of the dir. Is it possible to give a share
a differnt name?

Yes, it is possible. Do you receive any error message if you try?

Re: name a file share something other than it's dir name on Vista?
Sadly, I can't find any place in the sharing UI that lets me specifiy the
share's name. Is there a command line version or am I just missing something
stupid? Or just lost in my flu-enhanced stupidity?
I right click on the dir I want to share, and select Share... There's some
nice little UI to add user names and a share... button. No place to change
the name. If I change the dir name after sharing, the share is automatically
deleted. There doesn't seem to be any way on the share properties dialog to
change the name either. The share name is a drop down, not an edit box.

Re: name a file share something other than it's dir name on Vista?
In this case, you should do these steps: right click on the folder you want
to share, select Properties>Sharing>Advanced Sharing. You should have an
option to type the share name.

Re: name a file share something other than it's dir name on Vista?
Unless there's a UI mode that blocks access to the advanced share dialog, the
only way to get that is to look at all shares, right click one, select
properties, and there's an advanced share dialog there. IOW... there is no
Advanced Sharing dialog on the UI I see. As I said, all I get is the add
users dialog and then the cute little share button, which after doing a
security prompt, tells me I've successfully shared the dir.
Wait... poking some more, I found it. After first creating the share,
navigating to the all shares view and selecting properties, then choosing
share tab, clicking on the advanced sharing button, then finally hitting the
"Add" button, allows me to create a new name for it. How brain damaged is
that process? Unbelivable.
You can't make this stuff up.
