Network printing annoyances with Vista
I replaced the XP Home desktop machine (died) that hosts our laser printer.
The new box is Windows Vista. After the usual pain of working through issues,
it mostly is satisfactory. Two problems remain with network printing.

1) If the host machine (Vista) has fallen into an idle state (I haven’t
tweaked standard settings), my XP machine is unable to print to the printer
on the Vista system. I have to go and move the mouse to wake it up. XP as a
host never had this problem.

2) If either computer is rebooted for any reason, I lose access to the
network printer. I have to delete it and add it again. I assume this has to
do with the inability to retain the account/password to access the Vista
system.

I’d really like a fix for these annoyances.

It might not be a Vista problem. Check your motherboard BIOS settings to see
if you can set "Wake on LAN" to on or checked or what ever, that will wake
the system to pass the print job through. If you don't have this option then
don't let Vista fall so fast asleep?

Good luck, Rich

You probably need to remove all the printer drivers from all the machines.
Make sure you install the Vista printer drivers on the Vista machine
attached to your printer. The reason for removing the drivers on the XP
machines is that there may be a slightly different type that connects to
your Vista machine in sharing mode (or it configures by itself slightly
different). The new install should find these.

Have a read of the above link re Vista File and Printer Sharing.

Permissions/Share info is there as well.

I found nothing like that in the BIOS. I should have mentioned that the OS
is Vista Home Premium on a Compaq Presario SR2180NX.

Unless someone comes up with something better, I've set it to wait 4 hours
before going to sleep.

Did you find out how to rectify having to reinstall the printer when host or
shared computer are restarted. I am having same problem with my laptop and
home computer when sharing the printer ( canon i550)
