I attempted to connect my Dell desktop to my laptop via a Cat 5e Cross Over
Cable. Despite both being able to see both desktop and laptop under network
connections they refused to talk to each other saying that the name may be
mis-spelled - it wasn't.

Gave up with that. So installed Wireless Router. It works - can access
Internet via Wireless Connection through laptop.

But ................

despite being able to see both desktop and laptop under network connections
they will not talk to each other. Error message from desktop reads

Cannot communicate with Tracey-PC (192.168.2.101). Network diagnostics
pinged the remote host but didn't receive a response.

Any ideas guys?

Do you have sharing turned on in both computers?
You might try shutting down your firewall temporarily, see if you can see
items in the other computer, then restart you firewall. If the firewall
stops access, then find the options in the firewall to enable it.

You don't say whether you have vista/vista or XP/vista!

Have a read of the above link re Vista File and Printer Sharing.

Permissions/Share info is there as well.

If using Norton, McAfee, Trend Micro I.S., make sure file and printer
sharing is enabled in THEIR firewall.

1st thing to do is make sure that the Workgroup Name of ALL the computers is
the SAME.

In Vista Network and Sharing:

Network Discovery: ON (So it can see the other computers)

Network set to Private (Public is for hotspots, airports, etc)

File Sharing: ON

Public Folder Sharing: ON (Vista’s Public Folder is the same as XP’s Shared
Docs)

Password Protected: OFF (unless you want to set up identical usernames and
passwords on ALL computers in your Network) If you have it ON, you will be
asked for a username and password when you try to access a Vista computer
from an XP computer.
