x86, File sharing wont turn on.. 1068 error on manual start..

I cannot turn on the file sharing service in vista.. in the usual graphical
area.. it prompts for admin to continue.. then comes back with neither on or
off selected..

If i try to turn on the Server service.. i get "error 1068: The dependency
service or group failed to start"

I've also noticed eventid 7000 in the system log: "The srv service failed
to start due to the following error srv is not a valid win32 application"

This one makes no sense to me...

Any ideas on a fix?
