Cannot see Windows XP Computers

In the netwer centre the network detecting enabled .
And file and printersharing in there also, including the share with password
disabled?

Yes - network detection enabled. Tried with and without printer sharing and
sharing + password. No luck.

Networking in Windows has *always* been black magic (and I'm running out of
both ideas and young virgins to sacrifice!). Tragic that MS just never seem
to get it right with each successive OS release. I've never had these
problems with Linux.

Make sure you have installed LLTD (link layer topology) on the XP computer:-

This fixed my problem which was the same as yours.

Sadly. this voodoo didn't work either :-(

I can ping the XP machine OK. Just to reiterate ... the XP machine sees the
Vista machine fine - just not the other way round. This is beginning to annoy
me. What's the point of "upgrading" when my network is unusable?

First make sure that your NetBT setting is consistent, and is appropriate to the
personal firewalls.

Are there any known compatibility issues with Windows Vista home accessing a
Windows XP computer on a workgroup? I have a hard time believing we are the
only ones with this problem. I have disabled all firewalls, shared
everything, and still get an ACCESS DENIED message on the Vista computer
whenever I try to access shares on an XP computer.

On the XP machine.

Create a file in notepad named FIXANON.REG with the following contents:

Double click on the file and say Yes to the merge into registry question.

Hi - I have been following your postings in trying to resolve my
troubles viewing and accessing XP computers (and computers running
other non Vista operating systems) from a new Vista loaded laptop.

This is going to sound really stupid - but after also looking at other
forums - the trouble seems to be with Norton and registering "trusted
sites" within Norton Internet Security software. I know, everyone has
turned off firewalls, but the Norton version installed on newer
machines has other "helpful" programs that operate even when users
choose to refuse the Norton firewall.

Look at

Because a number of actions seem to bounce machines off of Norton's
Trusted list without the user's knowledge (sounds like Norton doesn't
it?) - the intermitant successes of some users is explained.

The fellow on the TechNet forum says to add individual IP addresses of
XP machines to the Norton trusted list on the Vista computer. So far, I
have turned off every action that Norton could possible execute - and
full access to my network is finally available. I plan to gradully turn
on and refine Norton options, checking as I go to maintain connectivity.
I have turned on Windows firewall options on all computers (after
turning Norton off) and do continue to "see" and share printers across
my home network.

Before modifying Norton the following conditions were true: I could
ping computers on my network using IP addresses from all computers on
the network, I installed LLTD on my XP computer and could therefore see
the XP computer on my Vista Network Map but still not access it - the XP
computer did not show up as a member of a workgroup on my Vista machine
however, I had all computers on the network members of the same
workgroup, I had changed network connection properties to choose
Netbios over TCP/IP on both the XP and Vista computers.
