Cannot browse internet on new Vista laptop!!
I just barely got a new HP Pavilion dv9500 with Vista Home Premium on it.
I have Comcast cable internet with a Linksis wireless G router.
I have 2 other computers in my home with Windows XP, a pc and a toshiba
laptop and have always had good consistent internet through the router with
both of them.
Now with my new vista laptop it shows that I am connected, but I cannot
browse the internet at all. It just sits there and thinks and thinks and
thinks, like its bogged down or something. I tried to download the Yahoo
messenger, and it just sits at 1% and doesnt move. My Outlook (Office 2007)
does not work at all. No sending or recieving at all.
Will someone help me please?? Is Vista the problem?? Is it my Router that
isnt compatible with Vista???
I have tried the repair connection, and it just says it cannot be repaired.
I am really stuck, and really frustrated.

PLEASE HELP, I Love my new machine, and I cant even use it!!!!

Re: Cannot browse internet on new Vista laptop!!

Check you network adapter settings and check to see if your home network
is set to private.

Are you getting a specific error?

Re: Cannot browse internet on new Vista laptop!!
Neither private or unspecified was checked....I checked private, was that
what I was supposed to do???
No, no specific error, just random continuous dropping of the connection,
and web pages never load, just sits and thinks. Once in a while I will get a
"this page cannot be displayed".
I have also been trying to download the Vista version of the yahoo
messenger, NO LUCK, moves really slow for a bit, then fails. I even
disabled my antivirus, still no luck......
Outlook (office 2007) will not work at all, its configured correctly for
pop3, but automatic send/recieve error. The same e-mail account works on my
iPhone, so I know the configuration is correct.
GRRRR, so frustrated.

Re: Cannot browse internet on new Vista laptop!!

If you're home or on a network you trust, then private is the setting
you want, otherwise use public.

You mentioned your router before, although its highly unlikely, visit
your manufacturer's website and see if there is a firmware update for
your router. Although I doubt that this is the problem, nothing really
supprises me anymore.

Oh, by the way, check to see if your IP address corresponds to your
router. (i.e. 192.168.x.x) if its not in this range or similar, then
there could be a router problem.

Hope that makes sense, if not, just tell me.

Re: Cannot browse internet on new Vista laptop!!
I thought about doing a firmware upgrade, but wouldnt i do that on the main
computer that the router is actually hooked up to?? I did do an upgrade a
couple months ago. You dont do that kind of upgrade on the laptop right?

I went into the command prompt, ip address for router is 192.168.1.XXX. So
I think thats looking ok........
There are so many others with this same problem I am noticing, What is up
with Vista??

Re: Cannot browse internet on new Vista laptop!!
You need to check for a firmware upgrade and run it from a wired
machine.

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/932134

also, if upgrading the firmware does not resolve the issue, unbind
IPv6 from the NIC on the laptop

Re: Cannot browse internet on new Vista laptop!!
I had the exact same problem last week although it was on an XP machine. I
tried every fix I knew of to no avail. My last thing to fix was repairing
the TCP/IP stack. I used an executable named something like
TCPIPrepair.exe. You can Google and see if you can find it. I do NOT know
if it will work on Vista. In the alternative, you can try this website:
http://www.howtonetworking.com/vista/removetcpip.htm or
http://grdead.ibloggie.com/reset-tcpip-and-winsock/.

Re: Cannot browse internet on new Vista laptop!!
I just went through two days of the same problem and I was ready to bring my
new PC desktop back to the Office Depot store! But after calling every
manufacturer, from the PC to the wireless router, I went back to the PC
(Gateway) and they figured it out (love that I talk to a person in SD and not
India!). It was McAfee Antivirus software that conflicted somehow with the
browser. If you have it, delete it. Then immediately install a different
one, like Symantec, before doing any browsing, chatting, etc. Also
discovered that Vista doesn't like Firefox, so don't try that browser.

Hope this helps.

Re: Cannot browse internet on new Vista laptop!!
Thanks for the reply and updates. Just for your info I use McAfee and
Firefox on my system with no problems. Strange but glad you got it worked
out.
