Network Print Job hangs

I have an HP CLJ 1600 printer connected to a Vista Business PC via USB and
shared. I am able to install the network printer fine on my XP Media Center
laptop but when I print to it the job hangs in the queue on the vista PC.
Restarting the print spooler service usually prints the job. I have had
lengthy discussions with HP support but they refuse to support it in that
configuration. They keep saying "This is a host-based printer". Whatever - I
have never had trouble sharing your host-based printers in the past. They say
the problem lies with Windows and I should come here for help. I am also
printing over a wireless network. If anyone is able to succesfully print in
this configuration, I'd love to hear from you.

Take the words "This is a host-based printer", you may setup the printer
using local port first and re-capture it as a network printer. This link may

Vista Print IssuesMany Vista printer issues are solved by installing the
printer as a Local ... You may need to install the Vista printer driver in
the printer server/host ...

These steps are for installing a network printer on a vista client. I'm
installing on an XP client. I do have the printer installed and connected
locally on a Vista Host. I am sharing from the Vista host and I'm able to
install it on the XP client by double clicking the shared printer and
answering yes to the prompt to install. I don't think these steps are valid
for an XP client.

After thinking about it, the only thing I can think that is causing this
problem is a driver mismatch. I'll try your advice but will install the
printer locally on the XP laptop, which will require me to temporarily
connect the printer to the laptop. This will force the XP drivers to load,
then I'll try to change the port to point to the Vista Host. I'll report back
after I make a visit to the customer.
