RDP to Small Business Server 2003

I have a Small Business Server 2003 -based client. I've recently bought some
new machines with Vista, and they work very well in the office.

However, the only Vista laptop user now needs to access the server from
home. I've already set up Outlook over HTTP successfully, and they are also
able to connect to the network via the "Connect to Small Business Server" VPN
connection. The VPN is too slow to run applications remotely, so I've given
them restricted access to log into the server itself.

The problem arises when connecting to the server. Firstly, RDP takes about 2
minutes to actually bring up the login screen. Double-click on the icon, and
it just sits there blankly for a while. When it eventually appears, the user
can log in and work as normal on the server - the speed is fine.

Apart from RDP being slow to show its face, Outlook 2007 is the biggest
problem. When connected to the work network over VPN, Outlook literally
crawls. It will sit there for a while saying "Contacting
C:\users\....\outlook.ost for information", then eventually it will connect.
However when trying to type an email, it is extremely erratic. Text will
appear in fits and bursts and its unusable. Changing the Outlook over HTTP
settings don't make a shred of difference. I currently have it set to connect
via HTTP on slow networks only. Outlook speeds up again after disconnecting
from the work network. It appears if its trying to connect directly to the
server - ignoring the HTTP settings - because it doesn't ask for credentials
when starting Outlook while connected to the work network.

Any ideas? I'm fresh out.

You may want to reset global autotuninglevel. This link may help.

Vista Remote Access IssuesSorry, Vista Home Premium does not include the
Remote Desktop Host and you can't use access Vista Home Premium using RDC.
In other words, only the Business, ...

Run the following as an administrator on the Vista boxen:

netsh int tcp set global autotuninglevel=disabled
netsh int tcp set global rss=disabled

This should stop the delays you are seeing with Remote Desktop.

This MAY help your Outlook problem, but I never experienced what you
are experiencing with Autotuning enabled.

The user reported back that the autotuning modification didnt help. And yes,
it is Vista Business.
