Why Can't I Print With Vista Machine on My Network????
Two machines running WXP Home. Got new PC (third) running Vista Premium.
All networked successfully. I have two HP Officejet G55/85 Printers on the
network. The printers are seen just fine by the Vista machine on the
network. I can attempt to print (test pages and such) and they go through
with no errors (it appears). However, there is never a print at the two
printers (nada). The WXP machines work fine for printing on the network.
What might be wrong here? Any help would be appreciated. I am a bit
frustrated.

RE: Why Can't I Print With Vista Machine on My Network????
Under Netwking and Sharing Center, mine says "password required" - so I have
to go to the network from my xp machine, find the printer - right click
-connect.

then I'm able to print from the xp machine.

Hope this helps.

RE: Why Can't I Print With Vista Machine on My Network????
My problem is the opposite. My two XP machines have the printers attached to
them locally. I have networked the printers to share. Both XP machines can
print across the network just fine (always have). When I added my Vista PC
to the mix, the two HP printers are seen just fine on the Vista machine (I
have no local printer attached to the Vista machine), but any prints go into
la-la land. No errors manifest, but just no paper out of eitther printer.
What's up with this. There has to be some hint here. Thanks in advance!

Dreanmachine,

Thanks for your post. I'm sorry you're experiencing trouble. I'm sure
you've already done all this, but just to be sure, please review this TechNet
article on Printer and File Sharing in Windows Vista:

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/net.../vista_fp.mspx

Let us know if the steps contained in that document don't resolve your
situation.

Thanks

I Figured It Out Finally And Can Maybe Help Others!
Well, messing around I solved my Windows Vista networking Print problem. I
post this in case anybody else with an older HP printer (or any printer
actually) is having problems allowing Windows Vista network printing. The
HP-developed Officejet G series driver for the G55/G85 printers I have
attached to my Windows XP PCs appears to be the culprit. In goofing around,
when I brought up the properties of the printers (on the XP machines) and
then selected a new driver (from the advanced tab) using the Windows XP
selection under HP printers (I selected HP Officejet G85), the Windows Vista
PC on the network was able to get a print out on the Window XP printers
(finally). However, by selecting this driver, I no longer had the advanced
capabilities that were offered by the original printer supplied driver
offered from HP. So here is what I did to get another printer working for
just the Windows Vista machine (via the add printer function). On the XP
machines I added printer. In the wizard, I first selected a ‘local’ printer
(not network) and instead of assigning it LPT1 (comes up as a default
selection), I did a port review with the down arrow and then selected the DOT
4 (where the real system default printer gets assigned as the local/network
printer). Then I went through the rest of the wizard, did a share on the
network selection and named the printer (Vista Printer). I did not allow it
to be selected as my default. Now, when the wizard finished, I did a test
page and it came out just sweet on the WXP PCs. I then went to the Vista
machine, did an add printer action and found the new shared printer on the
home network that I just created on the WXP machines. I did a test of the
print and wa-la, it printed like a champ from Windows Vista to the WXP
attached printer.

RE: I Figured It Out Finally And Can Maybe Help Others!
This was right on and glad I found this (after 4 hours of being frustrated).
I added the printer but made sure I was updated on the latest driver first.
When it gets to the screen that says "add printer software" just select your
mfg and printer and then click next. Don't click "windows update" or "have
disk". Worked like a charm.....
