Connecting wirelessly w/Vista to print
 

My network sharing center and network map shows my main xp powered computer
(named OFFICE) which is attached to a printer via a usb connection. However,
when I right click on the computer icon in order to begin the printer sharing
process it states Windows cannot access //OFFICE. When I click on details is
says Error code:0x80070035
The network path was not found. How can it not find this computer on the
network if it found it to map it? I cannot get to the printer part of my
dilemma until my new computer can "see" the OFFICE computer (by the way, I
downloaded a patch on the XP computer so Vista cans "see" it).

Did you actually set up file/printer sharing on Vista? The fact that the
Vista machine can "see" the XP box doesn't mean you're correctly sharing
file/printers.

1. Set up file/printer sharing on Vista and XP:

Excellent, thorough, yet easy to understand article about File/Printer
Sharing in Vista. Includes details about sharing printers as well as
files and folders:

For XP, start by running the Network Setup Wizard on all machines (see
caveat below).

Configure firewalls on all machines to allow the Local Area Network
(LAN) traffic as trusted. With Windows Firewall, this means allowing
File/Printer Sharing on the Exceptions tab. Normally running the Network
Setup Wizard on XP will take care of this for those machines.The only
"gotcha" is that this will turn on the XPSP2 Windows Firewall. If you
aren't running a third-party firewall or have an antivirus with
"Internet Worm Protection" (like Norton 2006/07) which acts as a
firewall, then you're fine. With third-party firewalls, I usually
configure the LAN allowance with an IP range. Ex. would be
192.168.1.0-192.168.1.254. Obviously you would substitute your correct
subnet. Do not run more than one firewall.

2. Once you know that sharing is set up correctly (test by exchanging
files between the systems), go to the printer mftr.'s website and
download the latest drivers for Vista. Run the installation and the
printer connected to the XP box should be seen during the installation
routine.

Thanks for the response....I followed all of the instructions and I did
establish file/printer sharing on Vista but the Vista computer still cannot
recognize the XP machine even though when I click on the Vista computer in
the network sharing window I can see my printer.

Not being a techie I have resisted the suggestion that I run the networking
wizard on the XP machine because all of my computers were networked before
(the work done by my IT brother in law who has since moved) and I am
concerned I will screw up the wireless network that IS working. I may just
wait and try and get the brother-in-law on the phone and have him help me
remotely. Or...if I get frustrated enough I will try to establish the
network again on the XP machine as you suggest.

Thanks for the suggestions..unfortunately none of the links work, whether I
click on them or cut and paste to my browser window...I get "this page does
not exist" screen. Your addressing the error message I received certainly
sounded promising though!
