Change network settings

I am using Vista Home Premium and have a broadband router connected to my PC.
I connected my laptop wirelessly. I keep getting the message that it can't
find the network. Then I get the message "set to mannually connect to
"xxxxxx" [another network in another city I was using]. To automatically
connect to a network, you need to change the network settings". I have
checked through 'help' and it is not helpful.

The router is about 3 feet away from the laptop. Can someone guide me with
this very frustrating problem.

How did you set up the wireless network?

You normally set it up using a wired connection between the computer and the
router.
Once that is done, you connect wirelessly.
