Codec issues with asf files in windows vista
Hi, I've got a problem in that wmp won't play the videos I have stored in asf
format. They work fine on an xp laptop, but wmp is refusing to open them,
saying "An audio codec is needed to play this file."

When I go on the web it tells me "You've encountered an error message
C00D10D1" and that "Windows Media Player cannot play the file (or cannot play
either the audio or video portion of the file) because the Microsoft ADPCM
Format (2) codec is not installed on your computer."

This is pretty much an out of the box machine, I've had it just over a week,
so I'm not sure what the issue is. Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

ASF is an older file format Microsoft developed.

Couple things you can try.

Easy: Try renaming the ASF file type to .wmv.

Harder: Re-encode using Microsoft's free Media Encoder to convert
to a .wmv format.

Best: Just play it in either XnView or GOM player.

I went for the GOMPlayer option in the end, worked a treat. Thanks.

Re: Codec issues with asf files in windows vista

Where did you get these ASF files from? They're not compatible with Windows
Media Player for Vista, sorry. You could reencode them to use a different
audio codec or use a different ASF player. =\

Re: Codec issues with asf files in windows vista

I just transferred some files from my xp laptop to my new vista and had
the same audio codec missing wont play issue but was browsing through
the pictures using Windows Photo Gallery and when it came across the asf
files they played! So if you just want to reassociate the files with
photo gallery it's a quick trick that works. Now I just need to find
out how to repair the ones that won't play from a defrag gone wrong...
yeah. Just thought this would be easier fix for anyone on here.
