How to find codecs?

When I try to play a movie I downloaded off the internet, the media center
says one or more codecs required to open this content could not be found.
How can I find and download all of the codecs to support the majority of the
files to play. I believe the file I'm trying to play is in avi. format if
that helps. Thanks alot.

Download a free utility called GSpot (search the net), it will tell you what
codec you need.

Go to the Codec MANUFACTURER'S site to download the codec. Codec packs can
cause all sorts of problems that are VERY hard to diagnose.

If you need the DivX codec, go to divx.com and download the package, but do a
CUSTOM install and ONLY install the codec. The other components of the package
are not fully Vista compatible.
