The truth be known I think Microsoft changed Windows Explorer in too
many ways from XP all at once that is confusing a lot of people.
Things to check in Windows Explorer:
Click Organize, Layout, Detail pane. This is my favorite setting which
allows you to see individual thumbnails even when you set Explorer to
show file details.
Next click on Views, then move the slider so it selects one of the
icon views. In Vista speak icon view means thumbnails. What you're
seeing now are placeholders. That happens if you don't select icon
view or if Vista don't understand the file type and if you have lots
of files in the folder Vista may not have generated a thumbnail for
all of them yet. Give it a little time.
Now something that apparently has thrown a lot of people for a loop.
Click on Tools on the Menu Bar, then Folder Options. Click on the View
tab. Make SURE 'always show icons never thumbnails' is NOT checked.
Click on Apply, then OK and that should do it.
