No sound recording ? audacity.
Been playing with mixing fun stuff, with bits and parts from ewrywhere
in to a compilation of humor etc..

I used Audacity from http://audacity.sourceforge.org.
back on windows xp,

Now i run vista premium, same hardware/setup
but vista wont allow audacity to record whats being played from
the what ewer is currently playing.

Before i could record small bits, just by hitting record,
now its just blank. No recording, and ive checked
speaker settings, and playback, etc.
Was recording from a mix channel, but its not availible on vista..

I fail to see what im doing wrong, cause it didnt previous
require specifik setup as it aparently do now.

Re: No sound recording ? audacity.

Vista employs a different sound system.

good news: audacity cannot find the record device drives, but you can
specify them yourself. go to the sounds panel, select the record tab and
right click in the panel. click on both 'show...' in the context menu.
you will get the WaveOut mix displayed. select it and click 'set
default'.

now your line mix is available and Audicity will record.

bad news... you may get garbled results. looks like MS has deliberately
made Vista trash your line recordings... probably at the request of the
RIAA.

whores have no ethics.

I am trying to find a work around. if i get one, i will come back (if
the admin doesn't kick me out).

keep a good thought.

I had the same problem, though i found out that i actually cant record
from vista.
I guess here is where hackers should come up with something and fix
this "bug" we all hate.

Re: No sound recording ? audacity.
whatever you do DO NOT INSTALL SERVICE PACK 1 if you use audacity and hard
wire the sound out to sound in to record streaming music. service pack 1
removed that ability. so now it just records from the internal microphone
even if you run a cable from music out to music in. when i tried to revert to
my old windows version my computer crashed and spent 2 hours fixing itself
then THEN REINSTALLED THE UPDATES! service pack one is a install of no
return...

they have gone too far now!

Re: No sound recording ? audacity.

Ok try this. RIght click on the Volume, (its down, right) Select
Recording Devices, now something should pop up. Showing Microphone and
Line In... There is also a lot of empty space, right click there and you
should get Disabled Devices and Disconected Diveces tick the Disabled
Diveces, and enable the hidden ones. Try record now.

Re: No sound recording ? audacity.

Solved the problem in windows vista x86 home premium, service pack 1:

Get a good soundcard with at least 6 channels, get a wire with a 3,5 mm
jack in both ends, get a jack splitter and you're ready to go.

Right click on the volume icon and select recording devices. Here right
click on the empty white space and enable show hidden and disabled
devices. In here there should be something called "stereo mix" enable
this.
Now hardwire your line in plug and the plug for your speakers. Remember
the jack splitter? Put this in the plug for the speakers so you can have
both the wire to your speakers and to the line in plug plugged in at the
same time.

In Audacity you now have to select the right device to record with.
Open edit, and select preferences. Then under audio I/O select the
microsoft sound mapper - output as the output source and select the
stereo mix as the input source.

This solved the problem for me. Ergo service pack 1 can STILL be
hardwired no matter what others say.
