Vista DVD Maker - Motion Blur on finished DVD
I've downloaded some mini-DV footage via firewire onto my PC - no problems
until I burned it onto DVD using DVD Maker (using the snazzy 'Performance'
template).

It seems DVD Maker has introduced slight 'motion blur', ie. the picture is
nowhere near as sharp as the original mini-DV footage - can this be improved
within DVD Maker? Can I use a different codec? Which should I use? Where
can I obtain them? How do I install them?

My system is Vista Home Premium, Core2Duo E6600 2.4ghz, 2gb ram, Geforce
8800GTX, 500gb samsung HD, Asus P5B-E mobo.

Worth noting that my broadband connection isn't set up yet (just moved
house) so haven't been able to get any Windows updates yet.

Any help would be great, thanks

If you're serious about making a DVD or editing/creating video stop
using the included Microsoft toys. As to the problem, you can't un
ring a bell. Once you let toys mess up the file it's ruined for good.
You still have the original source file untouched?

Since the cheapshakes at Microsoft didn't include DVD Maker with their
business version I don't have DVD Maker. What is the "performance"
template and what is it suppose to do?

Re: Vista DVD Maker - Motion Blur on finished DVD
Thanks for your comments Adam.

Yeh, I still have the original source file as downloaded from the camera
via firewire. The 'Performance' template is just a pretty Hollywood-looking
DVD menu put on the disc with DVD maker. I've ordered Pinnacle Studio v11
(although it's out of stock!) and will probably move over to that when it
arrives. Thing is, you may call Movie Maker a 'Microsoft toy' but I find it
amazingly intuitive - it only took me a few minutes to knock 20 minutes of
footage into shape.

It's a shame Microsoft are so hung up on Windows Media as a codec - if they
offered some more serious alternatives people like me might not look
elsewhere!

Re: Vista DVD Maker - Motion Blur on finished DVD
Always work with dv-avi, this is a lossless format.

When you make your dvd then the dv-avi file will be encoded to mpeg2 and
then converted to VOB which dvd players read.

This encoding will most likely be the reason for the problem.

What settings did you choose?

Re: Vista DVD Maker - Motion Blur on finished DVD
I have now also tried Roxio Creator suite 9, and that is 10 time worse that
Windows Movie Maker + DVD Maker.

The frame rate is so choppy you can hardly watch without feeling dizzy.
Funny as this Roxio version is getting good ratings. Think I need to go back
to VHS

Try Sony's line that I've mentioned many times. Motion blur is one of
the problems you run into that can be caused by different things.
Trying to avoid getting super technical about video stuff in this
newsgroup. Google topics like 3:2 pulldown, interlacing, and video
fields. Pretty good illustration, many others out there:

http://www.hthoma.de/video/interlace/index.html

Causes of choppy playback and motion blur are really two different
things. Bluring can happen if the action gets too fast. This can be
reduced by higher bitrates and by applying various filter methods like
Gaussian blur through one of several methods like interpolate fields,
or blending fields. Read up on Interlacing first to understand better.

It can make things worse if field order isn't right. For NTSC specs
Field order needs to lower field first. Pixel Aspect Ratio also plays
a part in how sharp the image is. For DVD it should be .9091.
