Yes - had truiied changing DEP settings that before posting this question - didn't work....
reinstalled codecsdownloaded MSFT site thinking rogue codecs werer at fault. Problem log indicates a specific dat t started happening which may be linked to an update sent by MSFT for Windows Defender.
How do i turn off Windows Defender? I have Symantec installed and running great. Why do I need defender?

Select the third tab.... DEP
Within this tab you can turn it on for all programs, only windows services,
