Recording audio

I'll be attending a 5 day course, 8 hrs per day. I'd like to take my
Vista laptop with me and record the voice. I'm worried that I'll run
out of disk space pretty fast. Is there any software that would allow
me to record in a compressed form straight away? Thanks
