No sound when playing videos, mp3s...etc

Can someone please help? I have Vista and when I play videos, mp3s...etc I
get no sound and Windows Media Player says "Windows Media Player has
encontered a problem while playing the file" If I restart the computer
everything will works fine, but then after a while the problem returns. The
speakers are plugged in and work fine. I have completely reloaded Vista but
problem reoccurs. I have also tried using other players (Real...etc) but
those don't work either. Is the there patch or fix for this? Appreciate any
help. Thanks.

Is this a crash in WMP or just an error message .... ?
