Movie Maker only imports *.wmv files

My OS is Vista Home Basic. I have tried the pre-installed MMkr (6.0)and
downloaded MMkr 2.6. In both cases the only type of file I can import is
a *.wmv. When trying to import *.mpg, *.avi type files it tells me I
don't have the right codecs on my laptop to play these files even though
they play fine in Windows Media player.

Any ideas?

are very different in what they will accept.

What bugs me is this software/laptop was bought to replace a set up in
