xbox 360 media sharing stops

xbox 360 media sharing stops when i try to play a video the is on my
external hard drive. the xbox can play any video or song on my laptop
hard drive but i get an error on my tv from the xbox saying that the
connection with the computer has been interupted and an error on the
laptop saying windows media sharing service has stopped and was closed.

-windows vista home premium
-all updates have been made
-tried restarting everything including router
the crazy thing is that my laptop had a motherboard failure a few weeks
ago and prior to this happening, i could watch movies from my external
HDD with my xbox. i did have to reinstall windows after the motherboard
failure.
any suggestions???? please help!!
