Windows Media Player 11 missing files

Possibly someone can offer me a hand with this problem. This is my first
post here on the forum and I have already done a search and read many
problems posted for WinMP but saw nothing related to mine. My install
was in July of 2008-Vista Basic Home 32bit and a clean install. Emachine
T3640 Intel Celeron cpu 430@1.80ghz 1gb ram. Less than 2 months on the
install and adding and building my system programs etc. adapting to
Vista and all the new [to me anyways] safety built in system programs.
WMP is my default player with all files associated with it. I have all
win updates and hotfixes to date {ran Belarc] . Sp1 was installed with
no horrendous problems as I have read others had. I use WMP and like its
features, especially enhancements- crossfading,srs wow,graphic
equalizer, quiet mode, etc.. also the visualizations-bars and scope. Just
the stock items that come with the player. I use these frequently. All
of the sudden they disappear. The screen where they show up at the
bottom of the player is black although the dropdown list under
view-enhancements still shows the list of devices. On clicking Now
Playing under Visualizations -there are no visualizations. They are
gone. Under plug ins there are no plugins. Clicking options brings up
the plug in section screen which is blank -the categorys are all still
there but with nothing in them. Anyone have any idea what could be going
on. I went to the "look for visualizations on the web" link and
downloaded a couple of visualizations 1] trilogy , 2] trilogyII which
were Win32 cab self extractors and ran them. I see they installed in the
program files/windows media player/visualizations as each being a .dll
file. Needless to say they do not appear in WMP so what next. Obviously
something must be missing in WMP. I read zachds' wmp tshooting guide but
although it is PACKED with excellent info I am stumped. I accept the
fact that WMP is part of the operating system and can't be uninstalled.
Does this mean you can't replace a dll if it were to be corrupted or
something along those lines. I know there are other players and I use a
couple but would like WMP as my main player. Also since this has
happened WMP starts up in Library and I cannot figure out how to make it
start in Now Playing. Other than these missing parts it plays music and
video fine. Any suggestions?????---Would be greatly appreciated.
Of course I don't have a recovery disc or any disc as I bought the
machine from a computer shop.

Re: Windows Media Player 11 missing files

Hello zappaboss, and welcome to the forums, arty:

you may want to try a system file check, Instructions 'Here'

if you have any corrupt or incorrect .DLL's this should fix things up

hope this helps

Re: Windows Media Player 11 missing files

Well, so far nothing or I am doing something wrong. Here's what I did
exactly

1. I am using classic view for start menu so I don't have your search
box
2. I went to search for files and folders and typed cmd Nothing
returned
3. I then clicked start/programs/accessories/right clicked on command
prompt in drop down and clicked run as administrator in dropdown. This
brought up black dos screen with the following

c:\Windows\system32> _ I then typed
findstr /c:"[cr]" %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log>sfcdetails.txt pressed
enter key

the screen jumped down to the next line with c:\Windows\system32>_
and just sat there.................so what did I do wrong????????????

Re: Windows Media Player 11 missing files

it looks like you're almost there
NOTE
due to the way that vista works it is best to run this command in Safe
mode ( if you're not sure how see this 'link'
(http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/123496-safe-mode.html) from the
tutorial)

Firstly when in the admin CMD window you need to run the following
command

Code:
--------------------
sfc /scannow
--------------------
That will take a little time and check all the system files for
integrity and will replace /repair files as needed ...

... when the prompt returns

type
Code:
--------------------
findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log >sfcdetails.txt
--------------------
*Note

*the entry in the square brackets is SR not CR as shown in your last
post

this instruction creates a file sfcdetails.txt which contains any files
that SFC could not repair and so have to be replaced manually

Type
Code:
--------------------
sfcdetails.txt
--------------------
and Enter to display the contents of this file on screen

any files shown in this file may be manually replaced using the
procedure shown by following the link
'*_Microsoft_Help_and_Support:_KB929833_*'
(http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929833) at the bottom of the tutorial.

Re: Windows Media Player 11 missing files

Ran sfc /scannow--it ran to 100% and said:

Windows Resourse Protection did not find any integrity violations

1. I then typed findstr /c:"[sr]" %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log
>sfcdetails.txt

2. hit enter
3. screen jumps down a line to c:\windows\system32> and just sits
there

Maybe there was nothing to find right--Where to now????

Re: Windows Media Player 11 missing files

OK zappaboss

you could try this next

into the elevated cmd prompt (cmd.exe, run as administrator, as before)
type this

Code:
--------------------
for %a in (%systemroot%\system32\wm*.dll) do regsvr32 /s %a
--------------------
and press enter

what this does is re-register all the dll's related to WMP which will
hopefully get things working again which has been reported by others
with similar problems to yours.

if this does not work then the only thing I can suggest is a repair
install of vista, which of course needs a vista disk which you don't
have , (unless you can borrow one from a friend )

Re: Windows Media Player 11 missing files

Ok started in safe mode elevated command prompt administrator
1. typed for %a in (%systemroot%\system32\wm*.dll) do regsvr32 /s %a
2. hit enter
3.screen jumps down a line
4. [c:Windows\system32\wm*.dll] was unexpected at this time

also note: When I installed visualizations or run anything for that
matter [autoruns,auslogics defrag,procexp,malwarebytes] I always right
click and select run as admin.
Ran WMP as admin and nothing is changed. Heres technical info from
help/about in wmp. Is this what I have or is this what is suppose to be
there? I use Sonique as a player but the equalizer is not as good as
wmp. I sure would not want to lose programs in a install. Could it be a
registry error? I did run Ccleaner before the sp1 install. Any other
ideas? Worst case-best case scenario.............?

Re: Windows Media Player 11 missing files

Note that those DLLs are not designed to be registered in Windows Vista, so
you will injure the registry when you do this. Not critically, but it can
cause weird behavior.
