Picture turned into file

Some of my pictures have mysteriously turned into "files" I have the file
saved to my desk top, when I click to open it, the sub folders open, but some
of the images show as a peice of paper. When I open that folder further, it
says the type is "file". I can not open in Photoshop CS3, bridge photoshop
elements or photo gallery. Please help.

They always were a type of "file". Try IRFAN Viewer (Free download and can
read picture files when the windows viewers cannot. Since it can also change
the file to a different type, it can be very useful.)

Can you see the extension?
Sometimes a problem like this can be changed by simply changing (
renaming) the "file" back to a .jpg extesion ( or whatever the extension
was originaly). If you can't see the extension post back and I will tell
you how to have them shown.
