Windows Movie Maker will not play .WMV file

I have recorded a clip which i need to edit with Windows Movie Maker. The
clip does play in windows media player, but does not in windows movie
maker...?

Do I need to convert the file to MPEG, or install any specific codec?

What codec versions does the clip use... ?
Does it work on a second PC?
