Pics AWOL from Windows Picture Gallery

I was working with photos in Windows Picture Gallery moving them between
folders, reordering and renumbering them, when the entire group of photos I
was working with, save one photo, disappeared from the folder. That is, the
folder now contains one and only one photo. None of my other picture folders
contains the missing pics, they are not in the recycle bin, and searches of
the C drive and whole system using the folder name only turn up the one
photo. Any suggestions on where the missing photos have got to and how to
bring them back?
