no sound through rear jack

hi
i hope some one can help me
my problem is at the back of my pc are 6 jacks of diferent colours,my
speaker jack is pink so i put it in pink jack i then click the rear jack out
box no sound, remove jack, put back in tick headphone i have crappy sound
,what am i doing wrong this is a new pc with vista premium instaled,hope you
understand this , thanks how do i get proper sound out of my speakers
