First determine if ANY of the DVD is burned. This is easy to see if
you flip it over and slowly tilt it around under a strong light,
(filtered sunlight from a window preferred) and you'll see a color
difference between the very outer portion of the disc and the balance
of the disc on it's business (bottom) side.
If some or most of your DVD is thus "burned" (a different color) and
one disc after another fails to finish with it getting rejected at
about the same point (97-99%) then it sounds like the "lead-out" isn't
getting properly written.
Without both a lead-in and lead-out a DVD is utterly useless. The
purpose of the lead-out area is to tell DVD players that it has
reached the end of the data section, otherwise the DVD player will
just spin aimlessly looking for data where none is and you'll head it
clicking like mad trying to find it's way.
The lead-in that is written right after the hub at the very middle
contains information the DVD player needs to properly understand the
data. If a DVD or CD fails to burn and gets rejected at 4% or less,
then suspect the lead-in, if it gets rejected in the last 97-99% range
suspect problems with the lead out. Rarely will a DVD or CD get
rejected between 5%-96% where the actual data is written unless there
is something wrong with the blank media or some fault happens during
the write process.
Now what causes this?
1. Bad media. I have yet to see a spindle of blank discs not have at
least one, two, sometimes three or more "bad" blanks that simply
fail for one reason or another. That's just how it is.
2. Incompatible brand. Some DVD burners have a lot of trouble with
some brands. The reason is the difference in the reflectivity of
different brands and the type/power of the laser. Ditto for some
DVD players. Check at VCDHELP.com for an extensive list of what
brands and formats work well with what players and burners.
3. Your DVD burner needs a firmware upgrade. This is especially true
if you have an older burner and have purchased newer, faster speed
media. Some older burners can't play them at all or stumble at the
lead-in or lead out phase. Many burners can be updated by flashing
their BIOS, which is DIFFERENT than flashing your computer's BIOS.
Check your vendor's web site to see if this applies to your model.
4. Conflicts on your system. Because "burning" both a CD and DVD is
border line black magic meaning the hardware may go out of the
sandbox and do things that Windows or some other operating system
doesn't like or approve of, this can cause issues.
5. SLOW DOWN! If you have a DVD burner that is capable of running
at 16X only burn at 8X. This shouldn't be necessary, but seems
to help. I've burned in excess of a 1,000 DVDs. Almost always,
if I attempt to burn at full speed more often than not that disc
has issues. Either is doesn't burn or skips when played. There is
a very long technical reason WHY, I won't waste space going into
on the why this frequently happens.
My best advice AVOID trying to use Media Player or DVD Movie Maker
especially for the burning phase or any video editing application.
This is one of those situations where you want to go with a
application written by a company who's lion shares of it's business is
devoted to selling applications that write to CDs and DVDs.
Both Nero and Roxio (get the LATEST Vista approved versions) work
fine. I won't say they are problem free, but since I've installed
Vista back in February I've burned in excess of a couple hundred discs
and only a couple failed using Roxio's Easy Media Creator 9. When
running under XP I had similar success with Nero. Yes, both companies
are somewhat arrogant, both have weak customer service, both have
suits of applications that bloat up your system, but BOTH do burn most
CDs and DVDs flawless in all kinds of formats the first time and
nearly every time under Vista, at least that has been my experience so
far.
I assume it is similar in Nero, in Roxio all you got to do to burn a
multimedia type DVD (a collection of videos with/without chapters)
MADE in some video editing application is select copy, the fourth
option, go to you hard drive, pick the folder, you'll see a miniature
thumbnail of the DVD's main page and details of all the videos on it.
Just set the burn speed and click. About 7-8 minutes later a full (4.7
GB) DVD is produced with no problems 99.9% of the time.
Since I don't use Movie Maker or DVD Maker I can't say what it
produces in the way of output files, the end process of your video
editing.
The professional grade DVD Authoring software I use will produce two
folders a AUDIO_TS and VIDEO_TS folder which get made from MPEG-2
source files made in my professional grade video editor software which
is the ONLY format you should be using as source files for a DVD
project. If needed the audio stream originally in MPEG-2 format get
recompressed to AC3 format.
The audio folder (AUDIO_TS) should remain blank. The video folder
should contain a collection of both BOP and GOP files that contain the
thumbnails, and both the video and audio streams that end up on the
DVD. Either Nero or Roxio will easily burn these to a blank
unformatted DVD.
