picture display problem

I select insert picture from file and the window appears and I get an icon
but no pictures display for me. The view of the open file used to have
pictures of files and photos and stuff, now I just get the file folder and
it's empty.

Oh, the files are there, but it just doesn't show them unless I go into list
or display and then I can read what they are.

I want the picture view back? What happened? What can I do to fix it?
