Sound Recorder - adjusting levels

I have a problem with recording level. When I go to "Sound"
from the Control Panel (Classic View), then click on the "Recording" tab and
double click on "Microphone/Line In" there is no "Level" tab to take me to
any adjustment display. There is only a "General" tab which leads to nothing
of any use.
Also, I cannot hear what I am recording through my built-in speakers. The
speakers work ok, are not muted, and the display shows activity, ie the green
bars rise and fall with the sound level - but no sound comes out.
Please can someone help me with this? Thanks, Steve.
