WMP 11 playing .asx files

Running Vista on a Lenovo T61. When clicking a radio station website to
stream audio, I get the 'Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage' site -
instead of WMP starting up. I can cut and paste the url and get it working
that way, but is there a setting that will allow it to fire up automatically
(as it should) when I choose to listen from the radio station website? I had
read somewhere in help (but can't find now) where it said to check the .asf
box under the file types tab in options - but there's no file type tab there.
Can anyone assist?

That should indicate that the file associations is broken, as suggested - if
you reassociate using the Default Programs control panel's Set Program
Access and Defaults, does this then work?

What other players are on the system? One of them may have improperly set
one of the player's association keys. =\
