wmp 11 won't play dvd audio

recently purchased emachine pc plays dvd video but not audio. a window with
the message 'this version of wmp does not support dvd playback. do you wish
to use the cyberlink power dvd for dvd playback?'

looks to me like something was disabled in wmp to get me to use cyberlink.
cyberlink dvd player does play the audio and video, but i want both players
to work right.

does anyone know how to enable the audio playback for dvds in wmp 11? i
tried downloading codecs, as recommended by geek squad, that didnt help. i
went to msn troubleshooting sites and it either doesnt fully explain to a
dummy like me or doesn't effectively solve my problem. i also went to device
manager and looked for wmp sound card, as best as i can tell i didn't find
one, but how could a brand new pc not be equipped with fully supported basic
features such as audio and video playback? please help
