Sure. Most cameras, when connected show up as a drive in "Computer". Just
copy the photos off the drive using Windows Explorer.
WPG is intended to help you copy the photos, by knowing which ones you've
copied off before, etc.
You can't remove WPG, as far as I know, but you can change the auto play
settings so it doesn't pop up when you connect your camera, if that's what
it does. It doesn't for me.
Go to Start - Control Panel - AutoPlay
For Media = Pictures, if the option is set to "Import pictures...", change
it to "open folder to view files with Windows Explorer" (or whatever you
want). Look at all the media types, you may need to change another one
also.
If you don't like WPG, there's a newer version, called Windows Live Photo
Gallery. WLPG has a few more features and runs quicker.
