Distorted and choppy sound

Hello,

I'm using Vista Business (32-bit) and a Creative Audigy 2 ZS sound card.
I have installed the newest drivers for all my hardware components
including graphics card (GeForce 6800 Ultra) and mainboard (NForce4).

Sometimes all audio gets distorted somehow, it sounds like a "robot
voice" and won't go back to normal until I close the application that is
playing the sound. When I restart it, it is fine again. Also audio skips
sometimes and plays slower than it should.
It happens when there is a lot of CPU usage. Seems to me like the mixer
can't handle its job. But I'm using a dual core Athlon 64 and 2 GB of
RAM, so insufficient CPU performance should not be a problem.

It happens when playing music sometimes and when playing a game like
Battlefield 2, it just sounds crappy all the time. Changing the audio
settings doesn't make it better.

What could be the problem?

Does your computer have integrated sound? If it does try disabling it through
the system BIOS. Do you have EAX enable on the Audigy? If this is turned on
it could account for the funny sounding audio.
