ipod new laptop with vista goes bananas

i have a new laptop with vista and wanted to put my ipod and itunes on it i
inserted the disc and the laptop went a bit haywire kept going black
momentarily and icons disappearing and coming back once i installed it all it
opened itunes but didnt recognise my ipod so i couldnt update it with
anything

i have had my ipod for a couple of years
