I want to watch TV without it getting recorded...

....because I am afraid the constant writing to disk will cause my HDD to
deteriorate over time. Is this a valid concern? If so, what alternatives are
there for just showing the signal from my cable box/DVR?

I was thinking maybe there would be a way to run my TV signal in as another
device? Maybe tell Media Player it was receiving signal from a VCR?
