Maybe you are removing the extension...
which denotes file format.
For example.... birthday.mp3 to birthday...
replacing the .mp3 extension would make
the file useable again.
Maybe the following article will help:

Folder Options

Uncheck..."Hide Extensions For Known File Types"..
then you can see the extensions. You can rename
the files but must always retain the file extension.
