Thumbnails do not match photos

I have a brand new hp pc with vista home premium. when i place an xd photo
card in the reader on tower and open the files the thumb nails are of older
pictures that were deleted from card. if i read the card from the camera or
an external reader plugged to usb the thumb nails match. also if i copy or
import photos to the hard drive in my pictures or even the desk top the
thumbs match the photos. if i open the photos fully from the unmatched thumbs
it is the correct photo but the thumbs dont match. If I read the card from
the printer hooked to the same pc i get a different set of unmatched thumbs.
i have tried everything. techs at store say it is a vista problem and to wait
for a fix via an update. could it be a hardware prob with card reader on
tower? they say no because it reads them correctly to get on to hard drive.
please help
