"Media changing..." Six second delay for songs to start playing in
Hey. Anyone else noticed that when you click on a song to play in WMP 11 in
Vista that it takes six seconds or so before it starts to play. I get a
message saying "Media changing." It's odd because my XP system with the same
music files played songs in about 2 seconds. Any ideas?

Re: "Media changing..." Six second delay for songs to start playing in
Are you talking about clicking in the Windows Media Player library to start
the songs or in Windows Explorer?

I just tried about 25 times, double-clicking songs in my 10000 track
library, and every single time I had audio in what appeared to be less than
a second.

Are there other applications running on your PC that may be slowing things
down? I have about 20 open items on my task bar including Visual Studio
2005 and other memory hogs.

While it doesn't usually cause delays like 6 seconds, you may also check
your hard drive fragmentation. Fragmentation certainly does affect hard
drive performance. Hard drive fragmentation, along with insufficient RAM,
is a leading cause of slow response when opening files or starting programs

So, how much RAM do you have? Like I said, insufficient RAM is another
cause of slow response when opening files or starting programs.

In any case, it doesn't appear to be a general problem in WMP 11 though it
may be a problem when combined with some other hardware or driver or
configuration on your specific PC.

HTH,

Dale

Re: "Media changing..." Six second delay for songs to start playin
It is a brand-new Dell PC XPS with a Dual 2 Core processor and 2GB of RAM.
With that much horsepower, that's why it's confusing about the six second
delay.

Do you have any suggestions of what preinstalled software may be causing the
delay? It has Roxio and Norton Internet Security ... wonder if that's a
problem?

RE: "Media changing..." Six second delay for songs to start playing in
The same thing is happening for me, yet I usually have to wait 10 seconds for
anything to start playing. When I play a playlist, it can switch to the next
song quickly, but at the sacrafice of sound at the end of the current song.
It starts skipping and jumping like its doing its best to load the next song
into RAM.

I have a Dual Core Intel Processor T2600 at 2.16 GHz, 2 Gigs of Ram. One
interesting thing I noticed is that Winamp loads the songs just fine. No more
than one second to load.

Also, this problem occurs within Windows Media Center as well.

Something's up =/.

Not sure if you have a Dell, but this post on the Dell support site might
help:

RE: "Media changing..." Six second delay for songs to start playin
I have the same media changing issue. Anyone who knows why would be my best
friend forever! Really tired of the media player issues already. I have an
XP Pro SP2 box setting right here next to the Vista and it will play the file
perfectly, and no Media Changing dialog and no stutters or choppy play.

HELP! C'Mon MS what is the DEAL?

RE: "Media changing..." Six second delay for songs to start playing in
I also have the same problem. With MP3s, or DivX files it takes at least 5-6
seconds to load, with the "Media Changing" sign appearing just while the
delay happens. However, if I play AVI or WAV files, it plays instantly. Any
clues?

I have a brand new Sony Vaio FE41Z, which is the top-end of the new Spring
2007 Vista laptop releases.

I didn't have this problem on my HP Pavilion Windows XP machine, with
one-quarter the specs my new Sony Vaio has!

Re: "Media changing..." Six second delay for songs to start playing in
I also get this problem. And when playing a playlist, when one song (mp3) is
reaching the end, it can not play smoothly, like trembling for 1 or 2
seconds. I guess it is getting for the next song. But why this would effect
the quality of the playback??

RE: "Media changing..." Six second delay for songs to start playing in
I have the EXACT same problem. I just installed Vista(a clean install) and
loaded all the drivers for my Sony Vaio including the Vista updated Sound
Card driver. All my MP3 files take about 5 seconds to load up in Media Player
and I get "Media Changing" at the bottom. Also, at the end of every song I
get the same "choppiness and the song starts to break apart and jitter before
the next song is able to start smoothly. It's driving me crazy. I tried
reinstalling the original Vista sound drivers with no success. Everything was
flawless on XP SP2.

Re: "Media changing..." Six second delay for songs to start playing in
I have decided not to use wmp11 to play mp3 unless a fix for this releases.
