Media Player won't play dvds

I can't play dvds on Media Player. The menu comes up but when I hit play,
menu remains on screen and movie plays sound and only shows horizontal fuzzy
bars and a badly distorted attempt to show the movie in the background. This
happens with all dvds except those I burned from imported footage off my
movie camera. These play just fine. Help. I have Vista Ultimate.
