Microsoft did a number on users in that they did a horrible job
explaining how Photo Gallery works.
Windows Explorer being the system default file viewer will ALWAYS show
all files in all folders regardless where they are located on your
system. Only the ACTUAL location of a file is shown.
Example: If you have a file called my boat.jpg and you placed it in a
folder called pictures on your E drive that is the ONLY place it will
show up when using Windows Explorer. It's path would look like this:
E/pictures/myboat.jpg
Photo Galley by default only shows the contents of folders that Vista
EXPECTS to find pictures and videos in PLUS any additional folders you
tell it to include. What gets generated is based on how many different
ways any graphic file can be sorted which can be determined by how YOU
add metadata to the file or by what is already there.
Assuming you added tags to a file it may appear in Photo Galley in
multiple folders like this:
Example how Photo Galley may be arranged in left window pane:
Folder E/pictures
my boat.jpg
Folder all pictures
my boat.jpg
Folder tags
sub folder boats
my boat.jpg
Folder vacation pictures
my boat.jpg
Folder 2007
sub folder July
my boat.jpg
Folder Ratings
sub folder three stars
my boat.jpg
The actual file only exists in ONE place, in this example E/pictures
regardless how many times it can be sorted and shows up as a thumbnail
in specific folders in Photo Gallery.
If you tell Photo Galley to include the location of any of your
folders that contain graphic material it will include those in it's
listing. So if you didn't tell Photo Galley to include E/pictures in
it's list it won't show up at all and since it's actual folder what
the file is located wasn't included it won't show up in any of the
sorted folders either.
It's hard to follow in the explaining than it actually is. ;-)
